Thoughts for the moment/ orbs

But too busy to expand on them.... and this a part of the blog that is random. Not tying into anything related to anything really.

Conversations about orbs during the recession house party on friday... Note, I don't believe in orbs...but interesting neverless... a quote from a website:

Orbs are an exiting new area for amateur and scientific investigation. What are they? Could they be a form of angelic being - a material representation of an intelligent spiritual energy similar to the human form which is the representation of the real, spiritual individual. Could they be from The Great White Brotherhood or what the Bible calls the Principalities. Or maybe they are what is referred to in various cultures as brownies, elves, pixies, goblins, faeries, sylphs, sprites, undines, sylphids, salamandrines, sylphs, krolls, gnomes, kelps, kobolds, banshees, leprechauns, elementals, spirit guides or guardian angles?

There is this news story here.

Rube Goldberg inspired music video.

This video is inspired by Rube Goldberg. Uhhhhh, what can I say but well done. I guess it was funded by State Farm, which is kind of a bummer...

Who is my art hero at the moment?

The conceptual architect Wellington Reiter is my current art hero. He has been one of my faves for awhile and his work is helping me/ inspiring me through the pen and ink drawings I am working on in my studio (right now...), which is part of my MFA show. His book of drawings, sculpture, and writings have been one of my bibles I carry around with me for at least six years. His pen and ink drawings of structures that resemble cones, and exploded bridges, scribbled grid irons, and utopic recontextualized aircraft carriers, are mind blowing and full of creative genius. I can't help but hold this book dear to me. He is a precursor to another fave, the much more well know Julie Mehretu. But that is another blog. Here is a photo of one of his amazing drawings....

Friendtern

Another word for the new dictionary could be friendtern. It's when a friend becomes your intern, , or your intern becomes your friend. Both of these have happen to me.

Eye Pillow Phone

Or, Eye Pillow Pad.

A friend asks, "Does there exists a laptop or pda with a cozy pillow around it, as sometimes i fall asleep with these items on my bed and need a softening element around the cool metal case..... maybe something to make."

This should be created if it hasn't yet.

MGMT Kid's Anthem of a Generation?

In my opinion, MGMT, and Animal Collective are the two most important bands in the 21st century for at least the 20 somethings... When I mean important, I mean that they are speaking for a good majority of today's younger generation in America, and perhaps beyond into Western Europe.

Where Radiohead spoke/ speaks to 30 somethings... MGMT/ Animal Collective speaks for 20 somethings.

Where lady gaga (awesome as she is) is rekindling the old pop stylings, the above bands, have an originality in both music and that is very present and modern.
If I were to pick which band represented today's youth best (between the two), it would be MGMT.

Not my favorite band in the world, I tend to like Animal Collective and more experimental stuff more, but, still in my mind a fantastic, and again important musical act.

Kids, "Anthem of a Generation?"

You were a child,
crawlin' on your knees toward it.
Makin' mama so proud,
but your voice was too loud.

We like to watch you laughing.
You pick the insects off plants.
No time to think of consequences.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wantin',
To be haunted.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wantin',
To be haunted.

The water is warm,
but its sending me shivers.
A baby is born,
crying out for attention.
Memories fade,
like looking through a fogged mirror
Decisions to decisions are made and not fought
But I thought,
this wouldn't hurt a lot.
I guess not.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wantin',
To be haunted.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wantin',
To be haunted.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wantin',
To be haunted.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wantin',
To be haunted.

Control yourself.
Take only what you need from it.
A family of trees wantin',
To be haunted.

The Wandering Gypsy Mathematician

On the public radio program radio lab, http://www.wnyc.org/shows/radiolab/, they had a show on numbers where they talked about Paul Erdos, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paul_Erd%C5%91s. Fascinating man, who was a mathematician who wandered the world visiting fellow mathematicians helping them out with any math problems/ theories, publishings, etc.. they had. He got to the point where he had no home, very little possessions, and just "couch surfed," from one mathemeticians home to another. He became was a "tipping point," kind of god like figure in the math circles and has estimated that he has influenced over 250,000 theories, mathematicians, etc....
More on homeless mathematicians later, (ie. Swan, the ex Berkely Math professor, now residing outside of Adobe Book shop.

Ghost Malls

A friend posted on facebook, "Vocab, for the next decade: ghost malls." I couldn't like this statement more, and agree that we are coming into the age of these ghost malls. Lately I have either experienced this either in images, or in real life... from Detroit's abandoned aquarium to downtown Fresno where the local stores have shuttered, the community is fractured, and if you need items you have to drive out to the super mall which include Walmart, etc...

Mission Statement/ Dogma

This blog has no exact mission statement, or dogma attached to it. I will say that, like its title, it deals a little with technology, a little with finding warmth in technology, a little with dealing with today's current times, while not forgetting the past. In the 1940's the hearth, or fire in the home where the family and friends gatthered got replaced by the Television, and the TV acted as a hearth. Now its the computer, and current technology. There is not as much gathering, warmth, etc... in the home, but perhaps there is more of this "gathering," on line in the digital world. Social networking, and all that. The title is also influenced by my current final thesis subject, and art show, "The Phenomenology of Space and Sound." More on this later. I will also post stuff that I like, maybe helpful, aesthetically interesting, and hopefully random and thought provoking. I am also creating this blog to help document my navigation through my final couple of months of grad school.
Cheers,
DH
